James Scruton

Relief Map

It sounds like one we all could use,
some Rand McNally page devoted
to our personal ups and downs,
our burdens finally to scale.

How nice it would be to pass a smooth hand
over plains of regret or desire,
across whole continents of conscience,
to move fingertip by slow fingertip

from high to higher elevations
of spirit, all other mountains
truly less than molehills here,
those valleys mere thimblefuls of dread.
